Upper endoscopy also known as gastroscopy is a procedure that allows a doctor to look inside a person's digestive tract by using a long, thin, flexible tube that has a telescopic camera and light source at its tip, called an endoscope.

This procedure allows the doctor to examine the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum (first portion of small bowel) by viewing pictures of your digestive tract on a color TV monitor. Endoscopy helps in identifying inflammation, ulcers, and tumors.

Unlike Colonoscopy, during endoscopy, the endoscope is inserted into the body through the mouth and down the throat. Upper Endoscopy can also be used to treat few other conditions such as removal of polyps(benign growths), retrieving accidentally swallowed objects etc. The procedure can be carried out to find out the causes of bleeding, Swallowing problems, Abdominal or chest pain, heartburn.
